The Victoria Memorial is a large marble building present in Kolkata which was built between the period of 1906 and 1921. The monument is dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria and is now a museum and one of the most famous tourist destination under the Ministry of Culture. The memorial lies on the bank of the Hooghly River, near Chowringhee Road. The 1st Baron Curzon of Kedleston ( the then Viceroy of India, suggested the creation of a fitting memorial on the death of Queen Victoria. Lord Curzon proposed the construction of a grand building which would have a museum and gardens.

History

  • Victoria Memorial Gallery: Timing: 10.00 AM To 06.00 PM Close on: Monday and National Holiday Tickets: Rs. 30 for Indians and Rs. 500 for Foreigners. Free entry to school children upto 12th and army personnel in uniforms.

  • The Victoria memorial boasts off an overall of 25 galleries. This includes a royal gallery, Indian leader gallery, portrait gallery, arms, and armor gallery, and recently added Calcutta gallery. Victoria memorial also has the most extensive single collection of William Daniel and his uncle Thomas Daniel work. It also includes the works of Shakespeare and Quran written by Aurangzeb, Arabian nights, Rubaiyat by Omar Khayyam and books about thumri by Wajid Ali Shah.

  • The Royal Gallery: It displays a number of the portrait of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. They exhibit almost all the paintings which depict the life of Queen Victoria.
  • The Calcutta Gallery: The Calcutta gallery is known for housing a visual display of the history and development of Calcutta from the period of Job Charnock (1630–1692) of the English East India Company to 1911. 1911 was the time when the capital of India was transferred to New Delhi. The gallery also displays a life-size diorama of Chitpur road in the late 1800s.
